Priya Carlberg (she/her) is a distinguished vocalist, composer, and educator based in New York City.
Carlberg’s work exists at the intersection of improvisation and composition. Her process values aural intuition while pushing the boundaries of the human voice. She often utilizes a stream of consciousness approach, serving as a cathartic and unfiltered means to process her emotions. In addition to her projects as a bandleader, she collaborates in several groups, finding immense value in collective experimentation, reciprocity, and growth. Rooted in a diverse musical background, Carlberg's artistry draws from her classical piano studies, the jazz tradition, and her involvement in the rock and experimental music scenes. Her performances are noted for their infusion of humor and theatrical elements, highlighting the playfulness of musical improvisation.
She holds a Master’s in Jazz Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she was mentored by eminent artists such as Jason Moran and Dominique Eade.
Carlberg’s work has garnered recognition and support from prestigious institutions, including Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Samuel Huberin Taidesäätiö, Ramp Local, Metropolis Ensemble, and the New England Conservatory.
